Background
According to Vietnam’s General Department of Preventive Medicine report, Vietnam is one of 10 most sedentary countries in the world, result in at least 30% grown adult do very little physical activity.
Nothing is more important than health, but the amount of people in Vietnam today who do fitness exercise to improve their health is extremely low.
Expert are saying that regular exercise such as hard exercise or participation in physical enhancement activities in gym is the simplest but most effective measure to have a healthy life.
Challenge
I did some research on gym industries and found out some statics:
90%
people posting in social media saying that they will go to gym as New Year’s resolutions drop out after 3 months.
up to
67%
of gym memberships go completely unused.
82%
gym members go to the gym less than once per week.
31%
say they never would’ve paid had they known how little they’d use it.
With the high drop out rates, I want to answer a question:
How might we reduce the drop out rates of gym-goer?
End results
Personalized Customer Experience
Suggest ideal practice route
Realistic and achievable goal
Add Personal Trainer in Pass-payment flow
User research
Interview
I interviewed with 6 people who used to go to gym from age 20 - 32:
1. 3/6 interviewees stated that they dropped out gym because of lack of motivation.
2. 4/6 felt bored when “doing the same thing over and over again everyday”.
Competitive analysis
I analyze 4 apps that also sell gym memebership and find some gap points:
Lack of personalized experience
Almost app don’t provide enough PT experiences
These can be my oppurtunities to improve user experiences and be our value proposition.
That lead me to a question:
How might we motivated gym member and helped them enjoy the workout process?
Ideation iteration
I brainstormed the ideas with 3 questions why and come up with ideations:
Why do people not enjoy the work-out process ?
1. The activity is not fit to them
2. They're doing the same thing over and over again everyday
3. Their exercise intensity is too high
Why are people so unmotivated when they practice ?
1. Don’t see any result
2. Set unrealistic goals
Why are people so easily to give up ?
1. Nobody keep check on them
2. They forget the reason they start to go to gym
Solutions

A good goal gets it done
Key 1: Small change each week, big impact!
The goal that’s too unrealitics may make user hesitate to do. But if we make a weekly goal with set deadlines, it will be easier
Key 2: Everyone loves rewards.
To make users more motivated, we will give compliments and rewards like badges or voucher to encourage them.
Key 3: The more you conscious the more you get the work done.

Things I’ll do in the future
This project mainly focuses on the user. In the future, i’d like to talk more with gym owner and find more insights about their goals, needs and requirements.
Contraints and roadblock
Due to limited time, i can’t do enough research to have more value and accurate insights. Also because of that, i’m unable to conduct usuability testing to evaluate my works.
Main takeaways
Takeaway 1:
Find the right problem
This project mainly focus on the user. In the future, i would like to do more research and find more insights about the gym owner. My ultimate goals are always bring solutions that benetfit both user and companies, (and not a technical nightmare, of course )
Takeaway 2:
There is no such thing as a perfect solution
As above, the solution I proposed have ton of cons and maybe not good enough to be implemented. But I understand the process and can wait to do more research and usuability testing to improve them to be more flawless.
Takeaway 3:
Collaboration plays a key role
Team working maybe exhausting, but it take an important part in product design. When we carried out our project, the work was divided into parts and each member took responsibilities for their own part. During that, i got a lot of feedbacks from my team member. Not all of them is pleasure ones but i learned how to accept it and started to value them as i improved my design. My work turned out to become better and more quality. And I also started to provide feedback for my members and our team’s overall design was getting more right. So as I always remind myself, communication is king.
